As a report specialist of many years, I concur with your comments at the ed of your blog. Report should developed against a dimensional model. Too many times I have written reports against an OLTP database and the challenge is wrapping my head around the schema. If I am lucky, it is sort of normalised. Writing 'spider web' queries is not fun and prone to strange results. I have used various reporting technologies over the past 15 years with an emphasis one the good favourites, Crystal (and it's various incarnations) and SSRS. Telerik looks ok, but it seems to require a more developer expertise to compile and deploy. Deployment does not look straight forward compared to SSRS. I am about to embark on using Telerik reporting for the same reasons as you - my company has a Telerik license. I'll see if this ends in tears or not...

Mau, Do you mean that the report designer (BIDS) is slow, or is it runtime generation of the reports that is slow?

I remember that the BIDS UI could be slow, but I never remember that generating a report would be much slower than the SQL query the report is running.

Opening SSRS reports from the server with an url is convenient and powerful with all the parameters available. This level of control I am missing in my current DevExpress-based reporting system.

Matthew, sorry for the late answer. Last time I tested Telerik reporting about a half a year ago. There were improvements, like more control for custom totals, but the overall experience had not improved. We still use Telerik reporting for a single report in production, but that's it.

Your requirements are hard to satisfy. But if you have only a few databases to report from, and all are in your control in the same network, then I would experiment with SSRS.

Btw, what is wrong with Active Reports? I can't tell because I haven't tried it yet.

Hi Mika, I have been working since 2004 in Cognos BI a tool that I really love but very expensive.
Currently I am about to finish a product and need a reporting tool, either embedded or a server, but one that can render through a web url.
Since I will be using SQL Server 2008 my first thought was SSRS. Have tried to work in my local machine but it is way too slow.
I know this is an old post, but could you give me your feedback about working with SSRS? Is really that good? Was I doing something wrong?

I tested the callback settings.
Having EnableCallbacks = False didn't help on the "Callbacks hang up with DNN compression on" problem.

Bu I did get the DNN compression issue solved by having EnableCallbackCompression = False.
This also helped to get the ASPxPivotGrid work inside an UpdatePanel.

Doing application-level compression twice has always caused trouble, I've struggled with this with Telerik controls too.

Also, the DNN compression problem could be reproduced only on IIS6, IIS7 dev machine always worked.

I found a support question on this same issue:

EnableCallbacks = False was also problematic, because it broke the drilldown-to-ASPxGridView mechanism. Overall, I'm happier with the built-in callbacks.

ASPxPivotGrid uses a built-in callbacks mechanism, which may work incorrectly when being used inside an UpdatePanel. You should set the EnableCallbacks property to false to disable it. Probably, this will solve the DotNuke compression problem too.

There are few things you'll need to specify:
- Are you using MS Dataset Generator datasets? If so, which method did you use, Fill or GetData?
- Did you verify with a debugger that the dataset is filled in the runtime processing (NeedDataSource event)?
- Did you set the report's datasource in runtime procesisng?

I've had the least trouble when using a NeedDataSource event, running an SqlCommand there to get the data, and setting the report's datasource to this data.

A pseudo-VB example:

Hi Mika!

It seems you're well experienced with Telerik reporting. I hope you can help me out with a bug that has been keeping me awake for several nights now.

I'm trying to fix a web application that i've inherited from a previous developer. The Telerik Reports don't seem to work. Everytime a report is generated, the report comes up but with no data in it. This is true to all the existing reports in the application. I've checked the datasets and they are not empty. I created a test application with different set of reports and they work just fine. Since i'm new with Telerik, I'm not so sure what's wrong with the existing application.

A user even reported that the reports only work the first time around. Once she successfully viewed one, any other reports she will be opening from then on would have no data in them.

I'm not sure if you've encountered this problem, but any help would be very much appreciated.

In IIS6 you have to put Telerik ReportViewer in the <httpHandlers> section:

I've heard a lot of good of the DevExpress controls but haven't had a chance to try them yet. I definitely would be interested in reviewing the toolkit.

In practice I'm currently fully employed with work, with little time for personal projects. Getting to know DevExpress tools would certainly take some time before I could write a review.

It has been some time since I touched Captivate, but the process was simple.

First comment out or remove the lines that generate VBScript:

Then add the legal script somewhere in the .htm file:

I'm sorry but I don't have a direct answer to your question. Have you already posted this question to www.stackoverflow.com? Any debugging needs the iCalendar message in question, but of course you can obfuscate any sensitive data from it.

I've had trouble with Outlook 2003 vs. 2007 once and it was that Outlook 2007 required a VERSION:2.0 iCalendar in order to NOT to interpret the timezone as UTC/GMT. For example, DTSTART:20090527T090000 should show 9:00 in every timezone but DTSTART:20090527T090000T would show 9:00 only at the UTC time zone.

Hi!

Sorry, but calibrating LCD monitors is something I know almost nothing about. But I would say that it is ok to use it with the default profile (generic monitor or plug and play monitor). Monitor drivers in Windows are more like a saved profile for your display adapter settings.

Since I got rid of the last CRT monitor, I haven't touched display or adapter settings much. Perhaps the most annoying thing with them is that with laptops, multi-monitor settings (extended desktop) are reset regularly, and you have to manually adjust refresh rates and monitor positions.
